[NEW] The series we stopped watching so far in 2024

On The Ultimate Series Review, we review and rate of all the series we watch except that sometimes we just stopped watching some tv shows without even taking the time to review it. To help you avoid wasting your time, here are the shows we stopped watching in 2024 without finished the season and why but most importantly we want to hear from you! Tell us in the comments which tv series you stopped watching or if you disagree with our reviews.

Halo – season 2

We really liked the season 1 of Halo as it surprised us with a strong story while still having great action scenes. We remember that the gamer community but also the general audience had given a nice critics of the first season so we were thrilled when season 2 was announced.

Unfortunately, we rapidly found ourselves completely lost. Halo is a definitely one of these series where you will need to have a recap as one year passed since the last season and way too many characters and storylines to remember. The season 2 start with no recap or no explanation as if we are supposed to remember it all. The show becomes quite complicated but instead of it graping our attention, it just made us bored and unbothered.

Watch it if: you are or were a big fan of the game.

Instead watch: The Last of Us for the geek in you

Shōgun

We told you in the article ‘We watched the first episode of these 3 shows for you’ that we will give Shōgun a chance because of the great ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and the costumes but we had our reserves. Well, apparently we know well ourselves because we stopped in the middle of episode 2. The storyline is too complex and has not enough context for us to understand who is who and why we see this scene and why it will have an impact on the story.

Watch it if: you love asian history.

Instead watch: Bridgerton for the costumes

Three women

If you give us Shailene Woodley (Big Little Lies) and Betty Gilpin (Mrs Davis) in the same series, we will automatically say yes and watch it. Maybe a bad day, maybe a bad mood, maybe another show more exciting to watch at the same time but we didn’t go further than the 2 first episodes. While the story seems interesting, we might have missed the part where we had an explanation about why we were seeing what we were shown.

As you know, we love books adapted into tv show so we might give a chance to the novel and come back to the show later.

Watch it if: women stories told by other women.

Instead watch: Mrs. Davis for Betty Gilpin or Unbelievable for women’s tragedies.

The Regime

Another show that was part of our article ‘We watched the first episode of these 3 shows for you’ is The Regime. We didn’t really know what to expect but the quirky acting of Kate Winslet made us really appreciate the first few episodes of the series. However, we realized at one point that we were not following what we were seeing anymore and we were not understanding the point of the series or where it was supposed to go.

Watch it if: you want to be surprised by Kate Winslet

Watch instead: Veep for the cocktail of politics and humour

Strife

This show was being sold as the new funny feminist series but we think that it was just an easy take on woke culture with raunchy jokes. We really wanted to like the show as we enjoy watching Asher Keddie in Stateless or Nine Perfect Strangers.

Watch it if: you like story about women doing it all

Watch instead: Workin’ moms (definitely)

Population: 11

The show was promoted as ‘by the producers of Brooklyn 9-9‘ which is one of our favorite show so we were sold. Watching the first episodes, we understood it was a sort of parody of this very strange australian true crime / missing person documentary which we saw on Netflix. However, we didn’t continue further as the show didn’t seem which direction to take: it is not a thriller nor it is a comedy. Too bad as Ben Feldman (Drop Dead Diva, Superstore) is always providing us with a good time.

Watch it if: you need to turn off your brain

Watch instead: The Last Man On Earth

Palm Royale

Generally when we stop watching a show, we just give it a few lines in this article and move on but our disappointment was so important that we made a full review: we let you have a look here.

Watch it if: you are a sucker for chic 80’s life style

Watch instead: Loot

The Veil

We signed up to watch this show only because Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men, The Handmaid’s Tale) was in it and that’s enough of a reason. The female lead show’s first episode is giving us action, blood and spy vibes but the main character is played so enigmatic that we just didn’t get her. Maybe we will try watching episode 2.

Watch it if: you like spy story around the worl

Watch instead: Killing Eve

The Sympathizer

Where we watched The Veil for Elizabeth Moss, we started The Sympathizer for Sandra Ho (Grey’s Anatomy, Killing Eve): well too bad for us because she was not in the first episode which is the only one we last. However, we can understand that this show might be interesting because we are seeing another side of the Vietnam’s war and first generation of Vietnamese people in America. For this one as well, we might give it another try.

Watch it if: you are interested in America’s immigration history

Palm Royale – The disappointment of the season

What is Palm Royale about

Maxine is a country girl dreaming to be including by the crème de la crème of Palm Royale, Palm Beach most exclusive club. Snobbed by them, she will find a way to bend their will with blackmail, friendship, competition and name dropping when she reveals she is married with Douglas Dellacourt, nephew of Norma Dellacourt currently in a coma but still know as the queen of Palm Beach organizing the main event of the season being her annual beach party and holding her precious rolodex of local and international celebrities.

What a waste!

If you haven’t heard of Palm Royale then you don’t know that the cast includes none other than:

• Kristen Wiig, ex-SNL royalty, 5 time SNL host, star of the movie Bridesmaids and also seen in The Last Man On Earth
• Laura Dern and her iconic screams in Big Little Lies
• Ricky Martin (American Crime Story)
• Leslie Bibb (God’s Favorite Idiot, The Big Easy)
• Caroll Burnett
• Allison Janney (Mom, Masters of Sex)

Now that you know a part of the casts, imagine the disappointment when you watch a show with all these talented comedians and there is no laugh, bad script and boring dialogues.
We know these actors and actresses from their big performances in movies and other tv shows and lots of them were awarded for them but in Palm Royale they were just not given anything to play with or were directed in a way to suppress their talent.

The dialogues and the story don’t always make sense and because it is already boring enough as it is, it then becomes even more complicated to focus on and follow.
From one scene to the other, the relationships between 2 characters will be completely different and you can only wonder if you felt asleep without noticing at some point.

If you read some of our bad reviews, you know that what usually salvage the ratings of the show is the costumes and the decor as it is a very well representation of America in the 70’s.

What is Baby Reindeer about

Donny is an aspiring stand-up comedian trying his luck in London and working in a pub in Camden to make ends meet. We soon learn that he lives with his ex’s mother. A job he doesn’t life. A comedy career which doesn’t take off and an internal shame of his attraction for men and/or transpeople. It doesn’t look bright for Donny until a distressed Martha arrives in his pub and that’s when their twisted relationship starts between attraction, friendship and obsession … on and from both sides. 

Our review of Baby Reindeer

We would like to portray ourselves as experts of series and everything that is up around them but to be honest we heard about Baby Reindeer only because it became an acclaimed success. Being quite disappointed by some of the latest shows which joined our list of series we stopped watching so far in 2024, we hesitated before watching what seems to be Netflix’s next hit miniseries but went for it and absolutely don’t regret it because it is probably one of the best shows we saw so far this year.

Not throwing ourselves flowers but we liked the fact that earlier we described it as ‘relationship starts between attraction, friendship and obsession … on and from both sides’ because without revealing too much, we appreciated the complexity of the characters and decisions they are making and then undoing for better or for worst. It’s not a simple story of someone being harassed, it’s a story about human beings wanted to be seen and loved.

Of course, and like probably a lot of the viewers, we were impressed by the story but then our jaw dropped on the floor when we learned that the main actor was actually the person who the story happened to. It made the events even more horrible but somehow even more beautiful.

As you will see below the internet reactions the Mr & Mrs Smith are not as euphoric as ours which was really surprising. We could understand that not everybody like us as much as we did but to dislike it seems a stretch.

Griselda – A bump

We really like Sofia but there was definitely more to do with this role.

The Brothers Sun – Mother Michelle Yeoh

We didn’t understand how Michelle Yeoh’s role will become as important as it seems to be in the trailer but we loved how it was built up and not giving right away.

What is Apples Never Fall about

Joy Delaney is nowhere to be found. Neither her husband, Stan, or her children know where she could be. The police investigation will reveal personal and family secrets which were never supposed to be exposed: affairs, money, business failure, mental breakdown, betrayal, family history.

While following what seems to be the perfect Delaney family, we will discover that behind closed doors, they were not so happy: Stan (Sam Neil – Jurassic Park, The Twelve) who never recovered from his failed tennis career, Joy who doesn’t feel appreciated by her family, Troy (Jake Tracy – The White Lotus, Girls, Angelyne) who never met his father’s expectation, Brooke whose business seems compromised, Logan always looking for his father’s approval and Amy (Alison Brie – Community, GLOW, …) who always felt like the black sheep of the family. We also discover that a stranger, Savannah, was living with the parents for several weeks and let open wounds of her way out. 

Our review of Apples Never Fall

Liane Moriarty is our favorite author like we told you several times in our book-to-series articles so of course when we knew that after Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers another book from her was being adapted we were very enthusiast! Apples Never Fall is a well (screen and book) written family drama where investigation and family secrets and demons meet to give us a delicate series to understand family relationships and how complex they can be. 

Amongst all the things we liked about the show, we appreciated that like the book one episode was from one of the characters point of view: a good ways to know them all, their personal stories and how they deal with the different situations. It will of course also reveal their own personal secrets and how it plays a part in the big picture. 

If you want to understand which can a show you are about the watch (because we hoped this article will convince you), think Big Little Lies meets The White Lotus meets The Staircase.

Spoiler alert: don’t forget the tissues as this series left us several times in tears with some beautiful but also sad few moments.

6 must-watch tv shows we forgot to review in 2023 – Episode 1

We are back and ready to review 6 series we loved in this article. Happy New Year 2024 and we hope you will enjoy these new reviews starting with Fargo, Bad S

We watched the first episode of these 3 shows for you

2024 already offered us great shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Griselda or Expats and more are coming like the season 3 of The Bear or The Boys in June or new series like The Fallout or The Veil but what to watch now? We saw the first episodes of the 3 following series for you hoping to inspire you for your next tv shows sessions.

Shogun

We are starting with FX’s new drama series Shōgun. The first episode was released on February 27 and has already a score of 99% on the Tomatometer of Rotten Tomatoes meaning the score from the professionals of the reviews’ world vs a score of 93% for the general audience.
We found the first episode pretty complicated as there is a lot of stories within the main stories and a lot of characters. Of course the first episode is supposed to introduce us to all of that but we found it too complicated and not clear as if we missed the beginning of the episode or an episode 0 giving us context. We also guess that the fact that languages between english and japanese are mixed are not helping. However, we are in awe of the costumes and images.  

Will we continue watching? YES BUT we have our reserves.

Shogun does look epic but the first episode didn’t win us over

The Regime

We didn’t really now what to expect from HBO’s new show and we are quite positive about it so far! When the promo and images seem quite stern and serious, the show is quite quirky and we love see this side of Kate Winslet. We are not sure we would be able to tell you of the show but we advice you to watch the first episode.

Will we continue watching? YES. It’s our favorite show in this article.

We recommend to give it a try and we are sure you will like it!

Elsbeth

We haven’t watched The Good Wife (which Elsbeth is a spin off of) meaning we are not able to give a comparison of the two. Maybe it’s for the best because we saw that when people compared two things, they tend to be disappointed like Mr and Mrs Smith where people expected a copy of the movie (our review is available here). Elsbeth seems to be a female version of Monk or any kind of police shows where the main character is unconventional but brillant. We remember Carrie Preston from True Blood and we found it funny that True Blood‘s own Bill aka Stephen Moyer was starring in the first episode.

Will we continue watching? YES BUT it won’t be on top of our watch list

Expats – HRH Nicole Kidman

What is Expats about

Nicole Kidman is playing Magaret, a traumatised mother who lost a child. We follow her and her family trying to keep living despise the pain, the questions and the judgment.

It’s only little by little that we start to understand what happened, why we are following some characters, and how everything is imbricated.

In the luxurious life of Hong Kong’s expats, everything is not as beautiful as it seems behind close doors between adulteries, lies, loneliness and fake sentiments.

Our review of Expats

This review is going to be really short because only 4 episodes of Expats are out so we know still little about the story but yet enough to being excited by the series so far.

It has this ‘something bad happened but we only know what it is little by little’ vibe. Sometimes they also play us with the timing. We follow 2 scenes thinking they are happening at the same time to finally realize they are not synchrone.

Everything is quite slow and some scenes like Hilary being stuck in an elevator with her mom or Mercy having drinks with friends don’t seem to have connection with the main story but yet they also seem so important to understand it all.

Nicole Kidman is just excellent in her role of the mother whose worst nightmare happened. Her behaviour goes from frantic to numb and all that there is in between. A masterclass. We could say that we seem to have already seen her in this role (Big Little Lies, The Undoing) but we don’t mind as it is a performance to remember each time.
The supporting actors and actresses like Sarayu Blue (Hilary – the neighbour/best friend), Brian Tee (Clarke – the husband) and of course Ji-young Yoo (Mercy – the ex-nanny) are also very remarkable.

What the internet says

So far imdb users are not convinced by the first episodes and gave it a 5.9/10: 
« A vacuous empty story about empty vacuous people in an empty vacuous city.»
«The storyline is brilliant and it has me completely absorbed in it and glued to my seat wanting more.»
«The characters are uninteresting and hard to like. The pace is positively glacial.»

It is again Nicole Kidman in a role of a mother who had to live through a traumatic accident. But it is still excellent.

If you like Expats, you might want to watch

Ultimately each occasion we have to say Big Little Lies, we will say Big Little Lies.

What’s next for Nicole Kidman you are asking? Well, nothing less than the book-to-series adaption of ‘The Perfect Couple’.

The Fall Of House Usher – Not Catching It

It was a drag for us to keep watching the show but regarding its success we wanted to go until the end to understand what was the fuss about

What is Mr & Mrs Smith about

Two strangers are partnered up by a spy agency and become Mr & Mrs Smith, a couple working on high risk and secret missions for an unknown international company.

Now husband and wife under this new identity, they have to get to know each other during completely different kind of missions: from intercepting a parcel in the middle of New York to rescuing a person in Lake Como.

Despite a pact they made, they can’t help but develop affection then feeling for each other weeks after weeks and missions after missions. Unfortunately for them, where their bond is helping them personally, it also interfers with them becoming the successful spies they initially wished to be.

Our review of Mr & Mrs Smith

You would not get it from the description we made above of the show but the series is very funny. First of all, the two lead roles are played by Donald Glover from Community and Maya Erskine from Pen15. They both have different personalities but they learn to be complementary and the pet peeves of each other. Second of all, they found themselves in some tricky but often funny situations: having to babysit a grumpy 70 years old hostage, accidentally killing a target, insulting a bit too curious tourist, …

The series is well orchastred balance between their personal lives and the job. You will get great spy action as you would want because this is still the starting point of the show. We have car chase, gun, knife and fist fights, different locations, hacking, … but the personal aspect of their lives makes it real and grounded. Specially for a couple/duo that discovers each other and has to live with each other.

As you will see below the internet reactions of Mr & Mrs Smith are not as euphoric as ours which was really surprising. We could understand that not everybody liked it as much as we did but to dislike it seems a stretch. The comments are telling us that most people are disappointed because they didn’t expect a spin off but more a literal adaption of the movie into a series. The movie is about two spies falling in love which each other. Here we have two strangers having to become a couple to be spies. We loved the movie (it’s a classic!) and we loved the series but apparently internet cannot do both!

Last but certainly not least in what makes the show a 9+/10 for us is the guest list. Here is a list of the guest stars appearing in the show and which series you know them from:

We would recommend you to try Archer, one of our favorite show about spy with even more laughters, or Pen15 which we just discovered (and loved already after few episodes) while learning more about Maya Erskine.

Griselda – A bump

My rating: 5.5/10
Moment of the review: 03/02/2024 – We finished Griselda one week ago

What is Griselda about

We follow Griselda, a woman who had to flee her country, Columbia, with her children after shooting her husband who sold her out to his brother to erase some drug-related debts. However, she didn’t forget to stole 1 kg of pure cocaïne on her way out and tries to get the most money out of it by selling it to a Miami drug boss. Of course, as a foreigner woman in the 70’s/80’s, she is not taken seriously but with perseverance, violence and ruse she is able to secure a drug deal.

Her first idea is to go for a target that has not been reached before: the white rich upper class, always up for new thrills but too afraid to go get the drugs themselves. Her business is flourishing using girls to import drugs from Columbia in their underwear and their charm to seduce potential big clients.

Threaten by local and international enemies, we see Griselda Blanco using different strategies to stay at the top: money, murders, deals and lies.

The more and more we advance in her story, the more violent she gets but the more alone (and lonely) she finds herself.

Griselda is a story of a mother and a woman ready for anything to give the best life possible to her children but that looses herself in greed and ego.

Our review of Griselda

We didn’t watch Narcos so we thought that having Griselda coming our way was a way from the series Gods to give us a new chance at a south american drug dealer series which would be a good change from white (pharmaceutical) ones like Painkillers for example.

Let’s start with the positive which is for us the 70’s and 80’s era reproduce by the show in a very real way between the clothing, the music, the cars, the misoginy, … Another positive point for us was the acting from some supporting roles like Alberto Guerra, playing the role of Dario, the body guard then lover then husband of Griselda, and Vanessa Ferlito, the best friend of Griselda.

Now let’s face the two reasons for which we rated this show at 5.5 and not more.

Reason 2: believe it or not, we are no expert in drug dealing history so if you are Netflix and promise us a series about one of the most dangerous criminal that every existed, we want to see it and we will have expectations. Griselda was supposed to give the story of a woman who was not scared to resort to violence and murders to get what she wants. Well, except a mistake where a baby is killed, there is a total of what seems to be 6 murders in the show. We just don’t understand why we didn’t see more of the violent side of Griselda which would have help to make a bigger contrast to her devoted mother side.

Reason 1: for this one if your name is Sofia Vergara, please stop reading. Of course we know Sofia Vergara from Modern Family and then just from her presence on social media and public appearances. She is a funny woman who knows her strengths so of course we were excited to see her in a completely different role for her to showcase her repertoire. And here we go: we didn’t get it. We thought that the character was very one note. In her happiest momens, her angriest moments, in her saddest moments, she would give the same facial expressions. We remember a scene when she learns that another drug lord betrayed her. The camera zooms in her face and we know that on the script, it was written ‘we want to see rage in her eyes’. But nothing happens. We really like Sofia but there was definitely more to do with this role.

Colin From Accounts

Ashley and Gordon don’t know each other but following an incident, they happen to hurt a dog and rather than putting him to sleep, they decide to pay for a surgery to keep him alive. They are now linked by this dog and have to deal with each other: Gordon works in a brewery (hi Seth Rogen in Platonic) and is always his grumpy self vs messy but bubbly Ashley who has trouble making sense of her life. Of course you will get some romance but you will mostly get ‘heaps’ of laughs.

Deadloch

Do you remember the 2013 movie with Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock The Heat about an FBI agent has to work with a local detective? If you do, then you already understand what you are going to see in Deadloch. Two cops have to work together: Dulcie, the local detective, has to work with Eddie sent from Darwin to solve a mysterious crime which turns out to be committed by a serial killer. The clash between these two personalities and the other characters of the series made us laugh but the plot made us bite our nails!

Our rating: 7.8/10

Fisk

Forget How To Get Away With Murders or Suits, Helen Tudor-Fisk is now working for a law firm specialised in wills and family feuds after a big career in corporate firm in Sydney where she moved from after a bad divorce. Between her almost non-existent social skills and awkward humour, Helen has to adapt to her new life at the office but also with living with her aunt before moving back to her dad’s. Already 2 seasons available!

Our rating: 7.9/10

6 must-watch tv shows we forgot to review in 2023 – Episode 2

We know you love our list-article like the shows we stopped watching in 2023 or Netflix series we liked without telling you: Fubar and The Lincoln Lawyer because they are always the most read articles of our little blog. As some of you may have noticed, we took more than a big end-of-the-year break but we are back and ready to review 6 series we loved in this article. Happy New Year 2024 and we hope you will enjoy these new reviews of The Curse, Silo and Lessons in Chemistry. Don’t miss our episode 1 to see more reviews of must-watch series! 

The Curse

The Curse is definitely the most weird/annoying show of 2023 and we loved it! Season 1 just finished and were looking every week to a new episode. Emma Stone (Maniac) is playing this goody two shoes architect/artist who builds passive house in a native community. With her husband who we discover has a micro-penis, they decide to create a tv show about their journey to integrate these houses in the local community. This show is completely deranged and we confess that we had trouble to get into it in the first episodes because we didn’t understand the genre. This is a not a comedy where you will have laughter in the background. It is this kind of 64 degrees humour which makes you uncomfortable and wondering what is happening. This satire on white people wanted to push green gentrification makes us want a second season. The last episode is one of the craziest episode we’ve seen this year.

Silo

There are genre that we love (dark comedy, thriller) and some that we avoid (spatial station, end of the world virus) so Silo was not really the show we had in our must-watch list. With our new MacBook, we got a 3-month subscription to Apple TV so it was a good way to try the platform and discover shows we wouldn’t go for. The series talks about this community leaving in a .. silo because the outside world is toxic. The story focuses on Juliette, the new sheriff, looking to find out why her lover killed himself. We watched the show from afar until we couldn’t take our eyes off the screen. A bit slow at first, the intrigue is well built and takes us from a twist to another one.

The trailer is pretty much telling you the whole story but still some twists to expect!

Lessons In Chemistry

Let’s stay on Apple TV for this new review  with Lessons in Chemistry. We thought the show would be the transition of a woman from the a chemistry lab to a cooking tv show because of her gender but it was way more than that and it was a good surprise! Brie Larson plays a scientist who is stuck in her assistant role because she is a female in the 50’s until she meets Calvin, a male scientist, who is trusting her to become his equal in a study. From there, they mix romance and science with joy and drama. Even if the story was completely different from what we expected, we definitely enjoyed Lessons In Chemistry and are curious to know how close it is from the book it is based on.
